Storage Guidelines and Tips
Packing boxes for storage:
- Fill boxes to
capacity. Partially filled containers
will not adequately support more boxes
stacked on top without crushing or
tipping.
- As you pack boxes,
make a list of contents. Label all
boxes and keep a list at home for quick
reference.
- Add bay leaves to
boxes when packing goods to ward off
most insects and household pests.
Stacking items in the
self storage:
- If you will be
accessing boxes regularly, you may want
to use shelving to organize your space.
- Place heaviest boxes
at the bottom.
- Keep frequently used
or accessed items near the door.
- Leave a walkway so
you can easily get to items in storage.
- Disassemble large
items to maximize space.
- Store couches and
large chairs (except sofa beds) on end.
- Clean refrigerators
and freezers before storing. Leave
doors slightly ajar. You may want to
use the space inside for storage of
smaller items.
- Mirrors and pictures
should be wrapped with paper pads or
boxes and stood on their sides. Do not
store flat.
- For long term
storage, to prevent moisture from
wicking up from concrete floors,
consider putting down several 2x4's to
hold boxes off the floor slightly
